There are a number of defining features that separate Behavioural Safety from other methods of safety improvement initiatives.

Behavioural Safety Defined

Behavioural Safety should involve a systematic, improvement intervention; A unique feature of Behavioural Safety is the introduction of a planned schedule of events that combine to create an overall continuous improvement intervention: This planned schedule often begins with briefing sessions for all those work areas and departments that will be involved.

There are so many positive ‘value-added’ results that are within easy grasp of companies who use an effective Behavioural Safety process.

AZEA Safety Bubble Campaign 2013

A well designed and implemented Behavioural Safety process should lead to:

Improved levels of quantified safety behaviours: If the workforce has ‘bought-in’ to Behavioural Safety and are actively trying to improve their safety performance, logic again dictates that the levels of safe behaviour will increase. This improvement should also be visible at the workface. For example, people are following procedures, and people are visibly engaging in safe behaviours.

How do you get an ergonomist to see red? Say that ergonomics is all about chairs! Yet part of the Six Pack covered office setup (1992 DSE Regulations) and they led to better workstations for office employees. And as people realised the relevance of ergonomics in the office, greater recognition of its contribution in other workplaces and environments has followed.

On 1 January 1993, the Health & Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations were implemented as part of wide-reaching package of health & safety regulations dubbed the Six Pack, which were applicable to the majority of workplaces and covered the design and use of equipment, systems and the way people worked.

As a result, over the past 20 years, increasing compliance has led to much better workplaces for all.

For office staff, one element of the Six Pack, the Display Screen Equipment Regulations brought about DSE-related training, assessments and improved workstation design and set-up. Other workers benefited through a reduction of the risks associated with manual handling or the improved provision of better personal protective equipment and clothing to protect them from hazards.

Ergonomists/human factors professionals use their expertise to help plan and design safer working environments, equipment and systems so that they are easy to use and meet users’ needs. The introduction of the Six Pack regulations supported the application of ergonomics in the workplace.

Now 20 years on from the legislation’s implementation, the Chief Executive of the Institute of Ergonomics & Human Factors Dave O’Neill believes they have contributed to safer and healthier workplaces and promoted the value of applying ergonomics.
