Ergonomics is the method of constructing design around human needs in order to optimize system performance. This science can also be called human or human factors engineering.

Research is conducted by professional ergonomists who study the relationship of the physical human and it’s working environment. The research then drives the evaluation and design of tasks to make the job and the person compatible.

In the workplace, ergonomics generally refers to the appliance of this science to tasks, functions and equipment such as ergonomic chairs and ergonomic keyboards etc. Employers have a responsibility for the welfare and safety of the workforce and have a duty to provide the best equipment available and to train in its purpose. Good use of ergonomics in the workplace can reduce costs to the employer by saving on compensation pay outs to an employee who has been injured at work. The manufacturing industry alone could save millions of pounds by adopting safer working methods and better use of ergonomics.

Herman Miller Mirra Chair - Ergo Journal

What the manufacturer says: Mirra adjusts naturally to the body of the person who sits it. A conforming molded polymer back supports the entire spine. Elastomeric seat suspension follows the contours of the body, distributes pressure evenly, and provides aeration. A flexible front edge adjusts seat depth to keep the lower back in contact with support built into the backrest. A few easy-to-use manual adjustments fine-tune the fit and feel.

What the reviews say:

Jerry P Danzig on Amazon.com says: Needing to replace my old desk chair — and acknowledging my advancing years — I decided to find out what was the least expensive chair to offer blissful, sit-all-day comfort. After plopping down on every name ergonomic chair you’ve ever heard of (Leap, Freedom, etc.), I pronounced the Mirra the clear winner. (The Aeron is remarkably comfortable too, but more expensive.) I bought a loaded Mirra and have been very satisfied, with one little quibble for which I have deducted a star. That is, the two screws holding the chair’s back to the base worked themselves loose after a few months of use. “

An ergonomic office is increasingly essential for a safe workplace. Long hours at office and computer-centred jobs mean people are finding ergonomics to be a necessity rather than an option.

Ergonomic office products manufacturer Kare has published a list of 10 tips for improving the ergonomics of your office, and improving workplace health and safety.

1. One of the most important features of an office is the chair. Every office should have ergonomic office chairs so that every person will be able to make the necessary adjustments in order to get comfortable. The workers can then sit with their feet on the floor, helping to avoid strain to the back and legs.

RH Chairs, which specialises in manufacturing ergonomic chairs, has cut CO2 emissions on two of its leading products by almost a third.

Emissions relating to the production of its ergonomic RH Extend and RH Logic 400 chairs fell by over 30% in the last year, a third party audit found.

This decrease is due to large parts of the chairs that were made from virgin aluminium now being made using recycled aluminium. The RH 400 now has a new aluminium base which consists of less aluminium and also has a lower weight.
