WorkRite e-learning and training solutionsWorkRite, Posturite’s specialist e-learning and training division, is enjoying a record year. Turnover is up by almost 90% over the corresponding period in 2010, with several major new contracts in the bag.

These include the company’s biggest ever deal for its market-leading AssessRite DSE training and assessment package which has been licensed by a multinational energy company to be rolled out to more than 12,500 users in 24 different countries.

WorkRite has had to translate the software into a number of different languages including Arabic, Hindi and Gujarati.

National sales manager Ryan Church said: “On its own, this was a fantastic deal for us. But coming on top of several other major contract wins over this year, it means that we are yet again out-performing the market by a considerable distance.

“This is the fifth year in succession that we have seen big turnover increases, though never quite as large as this year. There’s no doubt that all the hard work we put into developing our products and services in the early stages is now paying off.

“Our powerful and intuitive management system, in particular, is a significant factor in winning business for us. Health and safety professionals love it because it makes their lives so much easier.”

The Ethical Code of Conduct and how to remain compliant. Essential for every business with the introduction of the UK Bribery Act.

The UK Bribery Act 2010 came into force on 1 July 2011. It amends and reforms the UK criminal law and provides a modern legal framework to combat bribery in the UK and internationally.

According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office: “The Bribery Act 2010, attracted strong cross party support in Parliament and received Royal Assent on 8 April 2010. Section 9 of the Act requires the Government to publish guidance on procedures that commercial organisations can put in place to prevent bribery on their behalf. Foreign bribery has been illegal for many years, with a number of individuals and companies having been convicted under the current law. The UK is contributing through the OECD Working Group on Bribery International Business Transactions and the UN Convention Against Corruption to increasing global awareness, enforcement and investigation of foreign bribery.”

Providing managers and supervisors with a general background in the concept and importance of risk assessments.

Risk assessments are vital for protecting workers, businesses, as well as remaining compliant with the law. As a Manager, you have responsibilities for others and therefore need to focus on the risks that really matter in your workplace. These risks need to be prioritised and managed, especially the ones with the potential to cause harm.

According to the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) “In many instances, straightforward measures can readily control risks, for example, ensuring spillages are cleaned up promptly so people do not slip or cupboard drawers kept closed to ensure people do not trip. For most, that means simple, and effective measures to ensure your most valuable asset – your workforce – is protected.”

Definition of a Risk Assessment

A risk assessment is simply a careful examination of what, in your work, could cause harm to people, so that you can weigh up whether you have taken enough precautions or should do more to prevent harm. Workers and others have a right to be protected from harm caused by a failure to take reasonable control measures.

The Problem

A major Engineering Company approached us with an issue in January 2009. The client had used a range of e-learning courses and had managed the roll out process internally for a number of years. A new requirement demanded that their e-learning solution be as automated as possible.

Within the business there was a small, centrally based, Health & Safety team supporting a large number of employees dispersed over many different locations. They wanted to provide standardised training on a number key Health & Safety issues and ensure that all staff received the training they required to work safely. Additionally, there was also a desire to deliver industry specific information using e-learning so that the client could track completion and maintain compliance records.

Ideally they wanted to:

  • populate a central compliance training staff database
  • pre-programme training for all users for the next 24 months
  • create custom e-learning on key industry specific topics
  • record and report on department and user training completion
  • managerial control over employee training

E-Learning

Ploughcroft Building Services of Brighouse in Yorkshire has been found in breach of r.9(2)(a) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and has been fined £10,000 plus £10,937 in costs.

The incident occured on the 14th June last year when an employee of Ploughcroft Building Services was on the rood of the Reddish Vale Technology College helping make the roof waterproof. He tripped on some cables and subsequently fell through the roof ligh landing on a concrete floor 2.6 metres below.

The employee sustained injuries to his neck and back that were so severe, he has been unable to return back to work.

The court was told that the company had failed to provide a cover or barrier for the skylight, despite being told to do so in a report by a health and safety consultant less than six weeks earlier.

HSE Inspector Sandra Tomlinson said: “This incident could easily have resulted in one of Ploughcroft’s employees being paralysed or even killed. Despite surviving, the injuries he’s suffered mean he has lost the confidence to be able to return to work as a roofer.

“There were children walking under the skylight just minutes before he fell through it, so other individuals were also put at risk by Ploughcroft’s actions.”
