A recent survey carried out by Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and Simplyhealth entitled ‘Absence Management Survey’ has revealed that the most common reason for long-term sickness absence among manual and non-manual employees, is stress.

EssentialSkillz looks into the findings of this survey and investigates the reasons for this increasingly common workplace absentee problem.

Redundancies looming?

There’s nothing like an absent carrot to keep you motivated in your job, especially in light of austerity cut backs. Affecting most industry sectors, headcounts are being analysed, job roles are being scrutinised. “Employers planning to make redundancies in the next six months are significantly more likely to report an increase in mental health problems among their staff (51% compared with 32% who are not planning redundancies).”

Public sector no longer the ‘untouchables’

Organisational change and restructures are common place within public sector bodies, however in more recent times, the end result is leaving people without any form of job security. Gone are the sideways moves, the slotting of departments into other divisions. Put simply, Government cutbacks mean there is a reality that entire public sector initiatives/organisations are fast disappearing, whilst those that do manage to hold on to some kind of role will have to suffer pay freezes and pension cuts. Public sector respondents identify the amount of organisational change and restructuring as the number one cause of stress at work.

The Problem A large event management company in the Midlands was prompted to act, to address the dangers of back disorders in the workplace, by an EssentialSkillz email newsletter publicising the HSE’s “Better Backs” campaign.

Realising their provision and management of manual handling training and risk assessments could be improved, they got in touch to find out how an online solution could be implemented to improve the situation.

The Solution Manual Handling Essentials is an online course designed to help organisations deliver training to employees as soon as they begin work and before they might need to practise a manual handling task. In this training course employees learn:

The Problem

A major drink distributor approached us with an issue in April 2007. An existing customer, they had already used our Ergowize online DSE solution to deliver training and risk assessments to around 160 staff nationwide. They needed to extend this process to staff based in their Glasgow office, but did not have the resource available to set up and manage this project.

Ideally they wanted to:

  • populate a database with employee details
  • set up a system to automatically generate email introductions and reminders
  • roll out online DSE training and risk assessments to 30 members of staff
  • record and prioritise associated DSE risks
  • outsource the monitoring of the concerns generated by the risk assessment
  • outsource the intervention required to resolve outstanding risks

The Solution

EssentialSkillz offers a managed service to compliment its Ergowize online DSE training and risk assessment solution. Dedicated system adminstrators (who are both product experts and DSE Assessors) are allocated to a client to provide a variety of support services:

The HSE is to be asked by a Coroner to look at the requirement for longer jump leads or alternative equipment to enable breakdown and recovery personnel to operate more safely.

The recommendations come following the inquest into the death in 2008 of a 58 year old breakdown industry worker who was killed on the road near Ringwood, Hampshire, when a passing motorist hit the vehicle he was working on.

He was positioned between his breakdown vehicle and the vehicle he was working on in order to apply jump leads and he could not place his vehicle in the preferred position some way behind the car he was working on. A verdict of unlawful killing was arrived at.

E-Learning

Ploughcroft Building Services of Brighouse in Yorkshire has been found in breach of r.9(2)(a) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and has been fined £10,000 plus £10,937 in costs.

The incident occured on the 14th June last year when an employee of Ploughcroft Building Services was on the rood of the Reddish Vale Technology College helping make the roof waterproof. He tripped on some cables and subsequently fell through the roof ligh landing on a concrete floor 2.6 metres below.

The employee sustained injuries to his neck and back that were so severe, he has been unable to return back to work.

The court was told that the company had failed to provide a cover or barrier for the skylight, despite being told to do so in a report by a health and safety consultant less than six weeks earlier.

HSE Inspector Sandra Tomlinson said: “This incident could easily have resulted in one of Ploughcroft’s employees being paralysed or even killed. Despite surviving, the injuries he’s suffered mean he has lost the confidence to be able to return to work as a roofer.

“There were children walking under the skylight just minutes before he fell through it, so other individuals were also put at risk by Ploughcroft’s actions.”
