The largest ergonomics event known will be held at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas starting on the 29th of November. The ergonomics exhibition which lasts for 4 days has already grown over 10% since the previous conference.

A major part of the exhibition and its growth is due to new companies signing up to join the show and also exhibitors increasing the size of their exhibit space. With new companies signing up to be a part of this expo the exhibitors include: 3M, AliMed, Cardinus, Equipois, Herman Miller, Power Pusher, Steelcase, Strongarm Designs, and many others. For more information on how to be and exhibitor you can visit the Ergo Expo website.

The Ergo Expo hosts a number of workshops and concurrent sessions free to all attendees. The workshops are basic information sessions regarding industrial ergonomics, and also how to implement the ‘ergo culture’ into your business.

99.9% of previous attendees whom are inspired by the concept of ‘ergonomics’ in the work place have said that they would recommend this event to colleagues and businesses. The National Ergonomics Conference and Exposition (Ergo Expo) focuses on ergonomics in terms of increasing safety, productivity and profitability in the work place.

The Health and Safety (display screen equipment) Regulations apply to computer terminals (VDUs), stand alone PCs or networked systems. They were brought into force to protect people who regularly use screen equipment as a significant part of their normal work (for example more than an hour most days and occasionally two or three hours).

People who spend more than two hours each day sat at a desk may experience headaches, neck and lower back pain, sore arms and shoulders or a combination of these problems.

Assess and Reduce Risk
As an employer you must assess the health and safety risks to your employees because of the use of display screen workstations. A risk assessment involves identifying the hazards and assessing the level of risk. You must reduce the identified risk to the lowest extent reasonably practicable. The assessment should be reviewed regularly.

For the first time, Safety & Health Expo will feature a dedicated seminar theatre exploring the topics surrounding health in the workplace when it takes place at the Birmingham NEC from 17-19 May 2011.  The Occupational Health Theatre, sponsored by Posturite and Colbrook Bosson Saunders, will focus on key areas including stress management, ergonomics, behavioural safety, equality and diversity in order to promote a better quality of life in the workplace.

“Monitoring and ultimately improving health in workplace has never been so important,” says Adrian Newton, Portfolio Director of Safety & Health Expo.  “There is so much that can be done to improve the quality of life in a workplace and through the dedicated seminar programme we will be informing and educating health & safety professionals about the best practice solutions they can put in place which will have immediate results and cam ultimately improve productivity.”

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) is encouraging all eligible health and safety specialists to sign up to a new independent professional register.

The Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register (OSHCR) – launched on Monday 31 January – is designed to provide a ‘national quality assurance scheme’ for health and safety practitioners.

Membership of the register is voluntary. To be eligible, CIEH members will need to have achieved Chartered status – which means that they would need a minimum of five years’ experience as a qualified environmental health practitioner and to have at least three years of compliant continuing professional development records. We hope membership of the register will encourage more EHPs to seek Chartered status.

Commenting on the launch, Andrew Griffiths, CIEH Principal Policy Officer, said:

“We have been working with the HSE and a number of other partner organisations in developing what we think will be the professional standard for health and safety practitioners. The fact that the creation of the register was supported by Lord Young in his recent review of health and safety, confirmed the need for expert safety advice.

“This is an important step in ensuring that businesses have access to consultants who can provide sensible, proportionate and informed advice on health and safety. As the Government’s inquiry recognised the advice of unqualified health and safety consultants has cost businesses dear in the past.”

“Improving standards and perceptions could also act to dilute the incessant flow of negative and trivial media stories.”

The application fee will be £60, but applications received by 30 April 2011 will be subject to a discounted fee of £30. The fee, which is non-refundable, covers the cost of processing the application and is payable annually on renewal of registration.

The OSHCR will be run a not-for-profit company set up by the professional bodies.

Workplace health and safety are important aspects of the business place that must be given proper attention to the details associated with how you protect your people and the premises. This can be accomplished with the very best health and safety solutions which meet in compliance with the most up-to-date legislation news and advice. As you know, since 2007, the Brady R.E.A.C.H. has been in place to protect human health and the workplace environment when it comes to the risks that may arise from the use of certain chemicals. There are two major conditions that R.E.A.C.H. is obligated to and these are the registration of substances on the EU market and communication of substances of very high concern (SVHCs) on the EU market.

In many instances, a business operates in a manner that involves chemicals and workplace health and safety are no joking matter. There are many different types of signs made from various materials to meet your needs. An environmentally friendly option means great for use indoors and outdoors, flame retardant and one of the easiest types of plastic to recycle. When you want to ensure that your message is clearly seen, there are floor signs with anti-slip protective laminate surfaces that provide slip resistant properties and easy adhesive backing.

In response to a high prevalence of neck and back pain among working dentists and dental hygienists, the dean of the University of Maryland Dental School Christian S. Stohler, DMD, DrMedDent, has launched an initiative to bring renewed attention to ergonomics into dental education.

Starting with the current semester, every incoming student must take the School’s course “Ergonomics in Dentistry,” before he or she can practice simulations or live-patient dental work. The School wants to be the place where dentists and dental hygienists learn to practice ergonomically correct practices, says Stohler.

“Three out of every five dentists live with the pain,” due to years of practicing with poor posture and other unwise positioning, guest lecturer Lance Rucker, DDS, director of clinical ergonomics and simulation at the University of British Columbia, told this year’s incoming class.

An integrated care program that incorporates workplace ergonomics appears to be a cost-effective alternative to usual care for individuals sick listed due to chronic low back pain, according to research published online Nov. 30 in BMJ.

An integrated care program that incorporates workplace ergonomics appears to be a cost-effective alternative to usual care for individuals sick listed due to chronic low back pain, according to research published online Nov. 30 in BMJ.

Ludeke C. Lambeek, of the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and colleagues randomized 134 sick-listed adults with chronic low back pain to integrated care — consisting of a workplace intervention based on participatory ergonomics and a graded activity program based on cognitive behavioral principles — or usual care.

The researchers found that the cost of the integrated care program was significantly lower per participant than usual care, at £13,165 (standard deviation [SD] £13,600) versus £18,475 (SD £13,616). The integrated program was cost-effective in terms of return to work and quality-adjusted life-years gained, and there was an estimated return of £26 for every £1 invested in integrated care.

“Implementation of an integrated care program for patients sick listed with chronic low back pain has a large potential to significantly reduce societal costs, increase effectiveness of care, improve quality of life, and improve function on a broad scale. Integrated care therefore has large gains for patients and society as well as for employers,” the authors write.

A new accreditation system for occupational-health (OH) providers will help the Government deliver its new strategy to improve public health in England.

Led by the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM), the Safe Effective Quality Occupational Health Service (SEQOHS) accreditation scheme was launched at a conference on 1 December, building on new OH standards for OH service-providers introduced in January this year. The standards themselves were proposed by Dame Carol Black in 2008, as part of her review of how to improve the health and well-being of the working-age population.

The overarching aim of SEQOHS is to provide OH services with a framework for quality assurance, and so help raise standards in this field. Similar to the Occupational Safety Consultants Register, but designed for organisations rather than individuals, the SEQOHS should help those purchasing or commissioning services choose a competent provider.
