New technology developed by Berlin’s Free University enables car drivers to drive without using their hands.
The Spirit of Berlin, an artificial intelligence group, has been testing methods to automate driving by using eye sight, as the video below demonstrates. The technology combines wi-fi, laser 3d detectors, GPS, infrared cameras, and a drive-by-wire system.
The RAC Foundation has called for cars to be made more ergonomic, and for road signs to be clearer and less ambiguous, in a study of road safety for the elderly.
In its report, Maintaining safe mobility for the ageing population: The role of the private car, the motoring charity explored “the economic, mobility, safety and environmental issues relating to roads and responsible road users”.
The study found that, when turning right at junctions, older drivers are five times more likely than others to move into the path of a vehicle approaching from the right.
