You can easily define ergonomics with a quick Google search and find there are a number of websites that offer a pretty consistent definition. Sounds good…so what more do you need to know? Actually, there’s a lot more, especially if you have back & neck pain and are looking to define ergonomics for reasons beyond preparing for your next game of Trivia.

Ergonomics is defined as the science related to a person and their work environment (equipment and workplaces) and how they affect human performance. The overall goal of ergonomics is to create a work environment that is safe for the worker, prevents typical work related injuries, and allows the individual to perform their duties at an optimal and efficient manner.

That seems simple enough….it’s a pretty straight forward definition. But, the problem with that definition is the word “human”! In other words, human factors and ergonomics must interface seamlessly in order to achieve the desired outcome, and as we all know, humans come in different shapes and sizes.
When you define ergonomics, you need to think of some key tasks that will ensure you are decreasing your risk of injury.

They include:

* Workstation Set-up (not just in the office at a traditional desk)
* Work Equipment and Accessories
* Correct Sitting Position
* Proper Posture
* Proper Body Mechanics Throughout the Day
* Safe Bending/Lifting Technique

In this section of the website, I have put together a few helpful tools for you to use as you define ergonomics for your own work environment. You can start by using the overall ergonomics assessment and then review the section on ergonomics posture. I have even included some tips on what to look for in some of the most commonly used equipment such as chairs and keyboards. You can access all of this information at the link below:

* Keyboard Ergonomics
* Ergonomics Posture
* Ergonomics in the Work Place
* Ergonomics Chair

Just remember, when you think of improving ergonomics as a way to decrease back & neck pain, don’t get caught up in the hype of product promotions touting fancy language like human factor issues or designs based on engineering psychology. All you need to know about their technical science of designing is whether or not their products can create workplaces to fit the user – YOU! That’s the only way to define ergonomics that will help you achieve your goals of decreasing the risk of injury and pain, while achieving maximum productivity.

The cost of a face to face workstation assessment is about £60 – £80 for a single assessment and about £36 – £40 per assessment for multiple assessments, so the cost saving to you is about 80% for a single assessment and 85% for multiple assessments.

The online DSE workstation assessment system will ensure that home workers and small offices comply with the Health and Safety Display Screen Equipment regulations 1992 and the system is automatically updated with any changes to the regulations. It will tire them off easily and they will need to take comfort breaks more frequently. This further cuts into the telemarketing services productivity. If these ergonomics continue for days, the work will become a sort of trouble for them. Helios Outsourcing is very particular about this.

  • Government advisor to give first full speech since his report’s publication
  • Industry stakeholders’ excitement over seminar grows

INSURANCE and health and safety professionals will get their first opportunity to engage with Lord Young on Monday, following the publication last week of his report Common Sense, Common Safety.

Lord Young will speak to an invited audience in the Great Hall at the Chartered Institute of Insurers on October 25. This will be his first appearance in a seminar environment and industry experts are keen to debate the radical reforms he has proposed.

Gerard Forlin QC, who will also speak at the event, said, “The UK has the best health and safety record in the world. We must be very careful that this pole position is maintained. Nothing must jeopardise it.

“That said, it is true that certain aspects of health and safety legislation and, in particular, how certain cases are investigated, funded and brought may need to be reviewed. Getting the correct balance will be an extremely difficult task to achieve. We all need to work together on this important task.”

In in the present day’s workplace setting, ergonomic workplace chairs are very vital. At work, many workplace staff are sitting more than eight hours per day. Throughout this time, it’s essential that ergonomic chairs be used, as they may help reduce shoulder, back, and neck strain. Regardless that they could value greater than the usual workplace chair, they are a smart investment just because they improve productiveness and may also help prevent severe injury.

When you choose the right ergonomic provide chair, there are several factors you must consider. You’ll want chairs with an adjustable seat, the right lumbar help, backrest, adequate seat depth and width, arm rests, and the power to swivel. You also needs to learn the instruction manual as well and be certain that the entire adjustment mechanisms function properly. If you find a chair to be faulty in any way, it must be returned immediately.

Take into account when choosing your chairs that there’s really no “one dimension matches all” for every body type. What’s greatest for one individual may not be your best option for another. Before shopping for a chair you should give it a attempt to see what you reckon. If it is not possible to test out the chair, it is best to just remember to can get a refund if one thing goes incorrect.

Before you buy or use an ergonomic chair it’s best to fully know proper posture and ergonomics whereas at work or at home. One of the fundamentals to ergonomics is ensuring [that a] chair’s seat top will allow the consumer’s ft to stay firmly planted on the floor. It is also excellent if the chair provides a lumbar help, which can fit the inward curve of the lower again area.

Office furniture is an essential part of the office interior and it must perfectly fit into the office design scheme. It should also be ergonomically designed to make sure that employees develop no physical complications after prolonged use of the furniture.

An ordinary worker spends a sizable part of his day at the office, so he faces the danger of grievous health issues if he or she has to sit in an awkward position or bend over his desk during work. Hence it is critical for employers to ensure that office furniture, particularly office chairs, are designed to maximize employees’ comfort.

Any purchase of office chairs must be made only after making sure of a few things. You should ensure that the selected office chairs are steady, easily movable and optimally adjustable. The arm rests of chairs must fulfill their purpose well, and the height should be changeable so that the occupant can adjust the chair as per his requirement. The chair should allow comfortable movement of hands and legs such that the worker can execute his jobs without any obstructions. The back support is the most important component of an office chair. It must be sufficiently curved and cushioned to provide the back and the spinal cord maximum support and rest when used.

A new national register of occupational safety consultants will be set up to help employers access good quality, proportionate advice, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has confirmed.

The Occupational Safety Consultants Register (OSCR) will go live in January 2011. It will provide firms with details of consultants who have met the highest qualification standard of recognised professional bodies and who are bound by a code of conduct that requires them to only give advice which is sensible and proportionate.

The register has been developed by HSE and a network of professional bodies representing safety consultants across Britain. Employers will visit a single website that helps them to find local advisers with experience relevant to their sector.

Judith Hackitt, the HSE chair, said:

“Lord Young quite rightly recognised that businesses find it difficult to know when they need expert safety advice and where to go to get it. The Occupational Safety Consultants Register will make it easier to identify consultants who meet the highest standards within their professional bodies.
