Businesses which actively promote employee wellbeing improve their financial performance, according to new research.
Analysis of FTSE 100 employers by Business in the Community (BITC) found that companies which took steps to improve health and wellbeing of their staff delivered a 10% boost to their financial performance on average in 2009, reports Personnel Today.
The study, carried out in conjunction with Ipsos Mori, found that 37 firms which reported against two or more measures on wellbeing – such as creating a happy and engaging work environment – demonstrated a total shareholder return of 61%. The remaining FTSE 100 had an average return of 51%.
Tapping on your arm or hand with a finger could become the way we interact with gadgets.
US-based researcher Chris Harrison has developed technology called Skinput which works out where the tap touches the skin, and uses that information to control phones or music players.
The system can also use the skin as a surface on which to display menu choices, a number pad or a screen.
Employers should do more to help workers suffering from musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) stay in work, a charity alliance has said, backed by shadow health minister Anne Milton MP.
The Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance (ARMA) has launched a Charter for Work to tackle worklessness brought about by problems such as chronic back pain.
MSDs are the second biggest cause of work-limiting health problems and sickness absence in the UK, responsible for up to 10.8 million lost working days in 2008/09.
A hearing research charity has published new guidance to help tinnitus sufferers manage the condition in the workplace.
Tinnitus causes ringing in the ears or head, with the noise generated within the body rather than coming from an external source. The noise level can range from a light buzz to a constant roar. It is often caused by working conditions, particularly among those working with noisy industrial equipment, or in call centres.
Some 9 million people in the UK suffer from tinnitus, many of them also coping with hearing loss.
The European Commission has announced a new consultation on the Working Time Directive (WTD), in a bid to create greater flexibility around working time laws for staff.
The consultation, which runs for six weeks, is the first step in a planned “comprehensive review” of the directive.
Issues likely to be discussed include:
- Working hours – in particular the opt out of the 48-hour limit
- ‘On-call’ time
- Flexibility on the averaging of weekly working hours
- Flexibility on the timing of minimum daily and weekly rests
The Targus Numeric Keypad is a plug-in for laptop users who use prefer the ergonomics of the desktop-style numeric keypad when typing in numbers. Besides the conventional wired model, there is also a wireless version of the keypad. It plugs in via a USB port.
The Targus Numeric Keybad is available in black and grey, and its dimensions are 12.7cm x 8.9cm x 2.5cm. It weighs 150g, and is compatible with PC, Mac and Netbook. The wired keypad retails for as little as £6, while the wireless keypad starts at around £13.
The Health & Safety Executive has issued a safety warning after a 36-year-old man was crushed by the descending boom of the telehandler he was operating.
The man was thought to have been leaning through the broken window aperture of the telehandler at the time. It is not known where the incident took place.
This is the third such fatal accident in the last seven years.
